Are you aware of the issues with mainstream services, but overwhelmed by all the information? Are you too lazy to spend hours doing copious research to figure out what to use and how to switch? Do you want a seamless experience that doesn't require a lot of technical know-how? Then this page is for you. This is the set up I'd recommend to maximize the security and usability of the internet for my hypothetical grandmother and all the grandmothers and grandmothers-in-spirit of the world.
If you are a grandma who has a question about a service I have not listed here, or wants to switch from something I've not provided an alternative on, feel free to contact me with your questions and I will walk you through it in a grandma-appropriate way.
- Operating System: Windows/Mac-->CachyOs. Yes, it's easy to use, no, you don't need to know anything about the command line. Yes, you can game on it. Use Proton. Any Windows game can run flawlessly on CachyOs, too, with no tinkering most of the time. It is also extremely similar to Windows, interface-wise.
- Instant Messengers: WhatsApp/Facebook Messenger/Viber-->Signal. Just install it on your phone or desktop. Too simple to even describe. But grandma must remain insistent that her bingo group uses it too!
- Discord: Perhaps you are a gamer grandma subject to the tyrannical hegemony of Discord. In that case, use Stoat. It looks near-identical to discord, but it is open source. E2EE (the stuff that makes grandma's conversations very safe and very secret) is in the imminent roadmap. Other options are Matrix, Spacebar (you will need to ask your grandchild for instructions on this one) and IRC. But Stoat will be fine for most grandmas.
- Broswer: Brave Browser is my pick, and it can be hardened using these settings.
- Phone: A Pixel phone with GrapheneOS installed, SHIFTphone (iodéOS) or NitroPhone.
- Calendar: Google Calendar--> Proton Calendar or Tuta Calendar.
- Email: Gmail or Yahoo--> Protonmail, Tuta or Mail.org.
- 2 Factor Authentification: Google/Microsoft Authenticator-->Aegis or enteAuth.
- Password Manager: Bitwarden, because it has cloud sync, which grandma probably likes for her convenience. For even more security, KeePassXC.
- Cloud Photo Management: Google Photos/iCloud-->entePhotos.
- Cloud Storage: Google Drive/iCloud--> Proton Drive
- Office Collaboration Tools: Google Docs/Sheets/Etc--> CryptPad
- File Sharing: WeTransfer/SwissTransfer--> Send.vis.ee
- Health Apps: Gadgetbridge, CommonHealth
- Maps: Google Maps--> OrganicMaps, OsmAnd
- Social Networks: Mastodon, Matrix/Element
- Router Firmware: (Grandma might need some help...) OpenWrt, OPNsense
